Murder on streets of Naples linked to Camorra

ROME - A woman was shot and killed in the San Giovanni a Teduccio neighbourhood of Naples, Monday night, in a brutal killing bearing the hallmarks of the Camorra clan warfare.

Annamaria Palmieri, 54, was found with three gunshots to the face, having been ambushed near the house of her son on the outskirts of the city in a region often referred to as the "Bronx." The area has recently scene a resurgence of clan fighting but this is the first Camorra-related killing of 2018 in the city.

Unlike other mafia organisations, the Camorra's structure is less hierarchical, with sporadic violence breaking out between rival factions.

Napoli Today reported that the woman had been killed "as if she were a boss" of one of the clans, though it seems more likely that she was merely linked to the Formicola clan. The paper likewise noted that she was nicknamed “Nino D'Angelo” for her "pageboy" haircut.

Palmieri had previous convictions relating to drugs offences, property crime and association with mafia.

Forensic teams were sent to the crime scene to gather potential clues in an investigation headed by Luigi Rinella of the Mobile Squad, a branch of the Italian state police. Police recovered her mobile phone from the scene and are now scouring its contents to search for clues as to the motives surrounding the killing.
