ROME -- The European Commission has sent a letter to Italy requesting an adjustment of accounts, confirmed by sources from the Ministry of Economy and Finance Tuesday, and is now “to the attention of the relevant offices.”

 The latest request amounts to 0.2 percent of the GDP, or about 3.4 billion.

 MEF sources, from the Minister of the Economy and of Finance, confirm that the Italian government is in contact with the European Commission and will make an appropriate evaluation in the next few days.

 The government will have to decide when and how to intervene. A potential compromise could be formed, or a corrective measure of a lower amount.

 If this fails, we will see a break between Rome and Brussels.
