Cindy McCain, Gardner tipped for Rome embassy posts
ROME -- The widow of Senator John McCain, from Arizona, is under consideration for appointment by the Biden administration as US Ambassador to the FAO and WFP, diplomatic sources say.
Cindy McCain was initially slated to be the Ambassador to the UK, but there is speculation that President Biden needs to give her the job of representative to the UN food agencies in Rome after she helped him win Arizona, traditonally a very Republican state.
Former president Trump started attacking Fox News for having called Arizona as being won by Biden back in November 2020, since everyone knew that it would take an awful lot for people from Arizona to vote Democratic. It was all to Ms McCain's credit that this happened. The Arizona legislature then censured her for her Biden sympathies.
Anthony L. Gardner, former US Ambassador to the EU and the son of a former Carter Ambassador to Italy, and then Spain, is tipped to be the new US Ambassador to Italy (He grew up in Rome, and his mother had left Venice for the United States after the 1938 Racial Laws were promulgated.
Anthony Gardner and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken are very close friends.
If Gardner does not get the Rome job, then he could possibly get the Spanish one (Gardner's wife is a Spanish Catholic), the sources said.
